Flying to Morocco - Flight Briefing

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

All flights must be conducted via the allocated VFR Routes provided in the AIP and Skydemon-it is not permitted to fly without these routes as Casa Control Radar review all tracks and paths of traffic to maintain strict control of the airspace.

In order to enter into Morocco via Spain you will be able to enter via Linto point or Barfa and join the VFR Routes. Tangier Airport should be an ideal airport to start your initial land away from Spain with entry being at Linto point.

Circuit is 1000 feet above elevation for all airfields-VFR traffics unless instructed by ATC.

Morocco ATC use DME/Distances for data and shall request informed on the DME/Distances from the VOR-please kindly be familiar with all the relevant VORs.

Ensure to insert all the VFR points on the Flight Plan.

ATC shall request information of times and distances from each VFR Point whilst on route.

There are prohibited areas allocated on Skydemon and in the AIP en route charts. Review these to ensure they are avoided at all times. There are multiple palaces that belong to the King this must not be overflown at any altitude due to security and formal reasons to avoid at all circumstances.

With all the strict rules addressed above, Morocco is generally a very well-organised, airspace regarding general aviation. The landing fees, parking fees and taxes are payable in the tower/ops department at the airport. It would be ideal to retain cash in regards to paying for Avgas, landing fees, parking fees and taxes.

Below is the link for the AIP, It is advised to print out the on-route charts or review them, or print them from Skydemon.

Due to the weather in July/ August, the performance may be degraded, wind gusts and thermal turbulence It is recommended to maintain a safe distance of 2000 feet over the mountains.

Airports towards the East are not normally advisable to visit due to thermals and visibility in the months of July / August.

It is advised to take off early morning to avoid gusts along the coast.

Recommended Airfields to visit

  • Tangier

  • Tetouan

  • Al Hociema

  • Fez

  • Rabat

  • Casablanca Tit Mellil

  • Essaouria

  • Agadir

  • Marrakesh

  • Tan Tan

The VFR and Commerical Traffic may be high in the months of July & August, so you may be required to hold for a period of time.

The more south you fly the less the traffic shall be, so it shall be easier and more enjoyable.

Be advised to have your pre-planning done for:-

-NOTAMs

-Weather

-VFR Route

-Airports for diversions(please ensure sufficient/full tanks for flying or a diversion). The airports in Morocco are sparse.

-No Night VFR under any condition.

Be as clear and concise with flying and ATC as it is a wonderful place to fly.

ATC are very helpful and pleasant and you are able to ask for assistance from them and in the tower when you visit them to submit your flight plan.

The airports noted are airports with Avgas available as some of the airports do not have Avgas. Always do a fuel drain after every re-fill to check for fuel contamination.
